Benjamin's Visual Diary

"Week 2: Draw Space; Your Space."

For the second week, I wanted to experiment with taking the prompt more literal, but still playing around with the idea of abstraction. I decided to play with the theme of "space" in a both literal and scientific sense. To make it a bit harder I decided to limit myself to 3 colours; black being the main background colour; then I was free to mess around with the colours blue and yellow.

I wanted to explore what space meant in the context of composition; and how having certain areas on the page focused on more could portray a certain emotion, even with limited colours.

For quite a few aspects of the drawings I did them with my eyes closed; or alternatively looking at something and following the movement of my eyes without looking at my pencil.

Entries One And Two

For the first two entries, I started off with the more "literal" ideas of space, things such as stars, planets, etc. I wanted to do something with my eyes closed, or looking at the object and following my eye movements. This is the most prevalent in the first image with what was meant to be my computer chair. The second entry focused more on filling up the "space".

Entries Three And Four

For the third and fourth entries, I wanted to start drawing the "space" around me as well as letting the first two entries' inspirations seep through.(So still keeping aspects such as planets, stars etc.) Mainly focused on following my eye movement for both entries, as i enjoyed the messyness of it. I would then fill up the "space" with whatever came to mind. First was the view from my window, and the other a more choesive drawing of my computer chair.

Entries Five And Six

For the last two entries, I looped back to the idea of space, deciding to take a more "imaginative" approach while still keeping the loose/messy style. The fifth entry was inspired by a friend coming to visit, who was coming via coach which I thought would be something fun to include. The last entry was simply from imagination.
